I have had second thoughts about this. I think that actually it does work to zoom in close (as conventional wisdom says), focus, then zoom back. So we can zoom in, focus with auto, wait for it to settle, then gently put on manual and zoom out again and not change it again.

Kaveh, I’m sure every one who already uses TeX can list their top 5 reasons as to why TeX has not lost it’s relevance or why it’s more relevant after 30 years. For me the last two sentences of your abstract summarized my thoughts.

Watching your video I figured you were just being gracious in NOT pointing out the problems folks have with the WYSIWYG systems. I suspect if TeX hadn’t come along you’d of hosted the troff conference.

Kaveh, actually your presentation was a great starting point for discussion. It had many of us thinking, I am certain, that with all the choices that are available to us as professionals, just what is it that makes TeX such a compelling tool. I, for one, found our discussions together quite relevant, since I, like you, went full circle from using DSR, troff, then WordStar, WordPerfect, Word, and now back to TeX. We all were just hesitant from divulging too much of our own talks in fear that you might capture our thunder—ha, ha! I’ll have more thoughts off-line. Thank you and all of River Valley for hosting a spectacular conference!

In the first segment of the talk, the method I featured was actually the ImageMagick “convert -filter lanczossharp -distort resize” method, not “convert -filter lanczos -distort resize”. Reason for the substitution: The full name of the method would overrun the slide width (and I did not want to change the slide format), the results (and frequency response) are visually identical, and this way I could skip explaining the difference between Jinc lanczos 3 and “optimized” Jinc lanczos 3 (a.k.a. lanczossharp in ImageMagick).

For me, the trouble with LaTeX (Which TeXworks doesn’t solve) is the dependency on many programs and libraries.

I would like to download Portable version of TeXworks and everything should work out of the box.
I don’t want to install anything but downloading it.

At least for the basic features, edit LaTeX and produce PDF.

Great to see my old boss Dave Farey, and Colin Brignall after so many years. Letraset was such a powerhouse of new fonts. The catalogue was everyone’s Bible. Sat next to the tin of Cow gum and spreader. These days, everyone’s so worried about whether a PDF will print, that new fonts are a bit of a luxury.

That is indeed interesting Kaveh. So would shooting the plate with just the right amount of preswelling using a specific water/alcohol mix, then allow with the dried plate a good edge-lit replay hologram?

In ogni caso, ricordo che molte aziende di consulenza/interinali richiedono di poter editare il cv per mettere dei loro disclaimer o togliere l’indirizzo e il numero di telefono del candidato.

in questo caso, il cv in latex non aiuta… il cv si richiede generalmente in formato DOC… una soluzione possibile, facendo leva sulla gentilezza delle persone, e’ fare personalmente queste modifiche e ri-mandare il cv in formato PDF all’azienda… ma ripeto, vuol dire che si ha di fronte qualcuno che ha molta pazienza…

Very good to get a flavour of the package.

I was actually able to type some of the examples from this presentation, and to make them work with powerdot (FSM and MINDMAP); while I downloaded several examples in .tex format and none worked at all, before .

Can one do beautiful typesetting on an iPhone’s screen? At present, the app is only for the iPad, but if you think it might be interesting to try, it wouldn’t take much work to adopt it for the iPhone, at both resolutions.

Are you going to modify the IEEE document style to be correct on the iPhone, whatever that means?

Incredibly boring presentation and pretty scary at the same time. If they think of mixing the concepts of non-destructive editing with the undo-history, images in Gimp will turn into huge, unmovable whales.

Non destructive editing is a good idea, but mixing it with the whole undo history is insane. Please!!

And this horrible presentation was conducted by the interaction architect, God! We are doomed.
